Microsoft and Wal-Mart in China March 4, 2008

I just read a great blog about Microsoft and Walmart’s experience in China. This article helps us understand the way of doing business in China is so totally different than the US. It is not enough to be the leading organizations in your industry, the Chinese don’t care. It’s conform to the Chinese way or the highway or the taxi or the subway or even a rickshaw! It doesn’t matter, you will not be welcome there.
The Chinese consumer no longer cares who you are and what you did before you came to China. The new Chinese consumer wants a great product at a good price. They are price-sensitive, highly demanding, and not brand loyal. This is can be an advantage if you are a new brand; however, it is also a disadvantage, because as soon as your competition introduces their product the new Chinese consumer is going to try it.

The Largest Airport Terminal In The World March 1, 2008

China has just opened the largest airport terminal in the world. Built in under 4 years and around 50,000 workers, Terminal 3 at the Beijing Capital International airport is nearly 2 miles long and has 64 restaurants, 175 escalators, 173 elevators and 437 moving sidewalks. However, there are no bookstores that sell foreign language materials.
This is a welcome addition to the Beijing airport. The previous terminals at this airport were way too small and were way too inefficient to meet the needs of this year’s Olympics. I remember whenever I flew out of Beijing I felt like a cow in a huge herd being led through lines, customs, and a security checkpoint that were way too small for an airport that services so many people everyday.
Even with how large this airport is, experts have predicted this terminal will be overcrowded within 7 years. That is amazing!
I am looking forward to the next time I am able to fly out of Beijing to check out this new airport terminal.
